Although claiming that the land was given them by God. And although they say they follow the Torah, neither statement can be defended. When they were given the land, it was conditional that they obey the Torah/Law and that they don’t do the same things as the Canaanites. If they did, the land would vomit them out even as it had dispossessed the Canaanites, (Lev 18:26-28). They failed to comply, and they were dispossessed in 587 BC. Since then, their living in that land was always under the suzerainty of successive ruling empires, the Persian, Greek and Roman. They were expelled by the Romans in 70 CE and not allowed to return. From that point onward, people of different ethnicity and faith settled in the land, and it came to be called Palestine under the Ottomans. So their claim that it is their God-given land is invalid. Even now, they disregard the Law/Torah, which states: And in case an alien resident resides with you as an alien in your land, you must not mistreat him. … he should become like a native of yours, and you must love him as yourself… (Lev 19:33,34). But it seems that religious Israelis, who profess to revere the Torah, are not familiar with what is written therein.

It was known as Palestine long before the Ottomans. See Nur Masalha’s “Palestine: A Four Thousand Year History”.
